Our house, Per Nefer, is around 400 years old. It was originally two terraced houses backing onto the mountain, but these were combined into one at the beginning of the 20th Century. It is located in the village of Cuxac Cabardès, 25km north of Carcassonne and we have recently had the exterior restored to its original stonework.
The village is situated some 600m up in the Montagne Noire where the vineyards end and forest start. It has a population of around 700 and has a comprehensive list of amenities - convenience store, baker, butcher, pharmacist as well as doctor and dentist , not to mention an excellent bar-restaurant where you are guaranteed a friendly welcome from proprietor, José, and delicious home-cooking at a very reasonable price prepared by his wife, Colline. The position of the village in a valley makes Cuxac Cabardès almost invisible through the trees lining the Carcassonne-Mazamet road that runs right by it, and for this reason, it is often referred to as The Hidden Village.
